Good Shepherd Lutheran Church was constituted July 13, 1958, with 104 baptized members of which 55 were confirmed, and began worshiping at the Moose Lodge where parishioners would clean up beer bottles in the ballroom from the previous night before worship. The congregation also worshiped in the Memorial Building and the Presbyterian Church on Maple Ave, before moving into the current building on August 2, 1964, which was dedicated in October of 1964 with the groundbreaking on a cold, snowy day.
The church has been served by faithful parishioners, lay leaders, and pastors, beginning with our first Pastor and Mission Developer Pr. Milo Gerberbing. He was followed by Pr. Herb Dubler, Pr. Jack Yost, Pr. Charles Barber, Pr. Robert Hawk, Pr. Paul Schafer, Pr. Judy Marlow, and also served by Interim Pastors Bishop Emeritus Ralph Dunkin, Bishop Emeritus Alex Black, Pr. Steve Gerhard, Pr. Dave Westphal, and Pr. Alvin Schafer; with the current pastors serving, Pr. Sean Smith and Pr. Devin Ames.
In 1974 Good Shepherd entered a Joint Ministry with Messiah Lutheran Church of Moundsville, WV. In 2014 Good Shepherd, with Messiah, formed the Cooperative Lutheran Ministries with Trinity of Wheeling, WV and St. Matthew of Benwood, WV, was a member of the cooperative, and First English Lutheran Church of Wheeling is the most recent member.
May God continue to bless Good Shepherd and their ministry for many more years to come.
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9
